Alchemy Acres is a non-profit 501c3 no-kill organization specializing in rehabilitation of animals with physical or psychological troubles. These animals are cared for until they can be placed in a forever home. Alchemy currently partners with over 12 humane agencies to aid animals with deemed “unadoptable” by their current policy mandates. Such partnerships are rays of sunshine for a no-kill future. Since its inception in October of 2004, Alchemy Acres has rescued and placed over 3,500 animals into loving homes. Any animals that cannot be placed into a forever home find themselves a forever home at the Sanctuary where they are loved for the remainder of their lives. Initially rescuing dogs as a teenager, Julie Sacco continued into adulthood where her family dove into rescue work after one pivotal day upon visiting the Columbiana County Dog Pound on euthanasia day. A friend of one of the Sacco daughters had seen a picture of a dog on the pound website and asked her to go adopt it for her. Once there, Emily and her mother Julie saw that there were two other dogs left at the pound. When they asked what was to happen to those dogs, they were told that they would be euthanized in the gas chamber. Unable to walk out and leave those dogs after looking into their eyes, and having only brought enough money for one dog, they scraped together change from their vehicle and purses and bought the remaining two dogs. From that point on, it became a weekly ritual for them to save the remaining dogs at the pound. The whole Sacco family is involved in every aspect of our organization. The Sacco daughters, Sarah, Emily, and Katie, and Sarah's husband Tom, are hands-on with every animal in the Sanctuary. This family is the backbone of Alchemy as they spend countless hours each day working in the Sanctuary and is completely dedicated to this mission. This continuous and complete family commitment provides a compassion that is lacking in most shelters. In addition, they provide a rare quality of customer service to people whether they are looking to surrender or adopt. Moreover, the organization presents a family atmosphere for all involved…people and animals. At any given time Alchemy has at least 4-6 caretakers who feed the animals, clean the kennels, and are very interactive with all of the animals. Ten to 25 volunteers frequent the Sanctuary on a weekly basis and over 250 different volunteers visit throughout the year to contribute to the cause. This growing group of volunteers comes daily to work with the animals. They walk dogs, play with them, and let them interact with other dogs; and socialize the cats. Each day every animal is looked at to check for any problems that may arise. There are many animals that are on daily medications and those animals are monitored for any changes that would require a change in their medication.Alchemy has several wonderful local veterinarians who work with them to insure that all the animals remain healthy and are spayed/neutered as part of the Alchemy Policy. All animals are given medical considerations, for example flea and heartworm preventative, as though they were already a family pet. Alchemy Acres is funded solely by donations and fundraisers, receiving no government funding or trusts. Team Members are grateful for every dollar as the entity operates on a shoe-string budget.
